27 August 2014: Houston – Aggreko, a global leader in temporary power generation, temperature control and oil-free compressed air solutions, has graduated the 5th class of its award-winning SelecTech program. The ceremony was held on Friday, August 22 at Oklahoma State University (OSUIT) where each graduate received an Associate in Applied Science degree in Diesel and Heavy Equipment Technology.
Administered by The Heavy Equipment and Vehicle Institute at Oklahoma State University-Okmulgee, SelecTech is an accredited, paid training program specifically designed to nurture young technical talent and fast-track the most promising students to successful careers. The 2014 SelecTech class has the highest number of graduates in the program’s history, and each of the 20 students will enter full-time employment as a Level I Technician at one of Aggreko’s 60-plus North American service center locations.
“We are thrilled with the success and growth of the SelecTech program,” said Devin Murphy, Technician Program Manager, Aggreko North America. “We take training and development seriously at Aggreko, and each one of these graduates has exemplified incredible skills, both in the classroom and in the field.”
Real world experience is a critical component of the internship. 2014 graduates were able to learn the real-life aspects of Aggreko’s business and had the opportunity to apply their knowledge at various commercial and industrial sites, from oil & gas and refining environments to championship golf tournaments and music festivals.
“This program turned out to be an incredible experience and adventure,” said valedictorian Kyle Dryden, a St. Louis native who has accepted a full-time job offer at Aggreko’s Chicago service center. “I would be at the world’s largest car auction one day and at the shop the next day – tearing down engines. That’s the great thing about this company; every day is different.”
The SelecTech program is designed to develop the skills needed to become a fully qualified electrical/mechanical technician, combining on-the-job training with academic study. The two-year, six-semester course covers the latest developments in equipment technology, as well as a well-rounded curriculum in courses like math, technical writing, psychology and business.
“The SelecTech program is unique from other technical schools in that students receive training on various types of power and HVAC equipment,” said Murphy. “While other programs will give you a certificate on one product line, our students receive a respected degree and a great foundation on multiple equipment lines.”
In 2013, the SelecTech program won Partner of the Year from the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education for its success. In 2014, Aggreko added a second building to its OSUIT training facility to meet the growing needs of its career program. The company also has plans to extend the reach of its internships overseas, where students will be able to train internationally with the Aggreko Power Projects division and at the Aggreko manufacturing center in Dumbarton, Scotland.
